The North Stonington Garden Club was founded in 1939 and has as its objective “the advancement of gardening and allied Interests.” NSGC works to preserve the rural beauty of North Stonington through education, service, and collaboration with the Town and its other volunteer organizations. The club has an active “hands on” membership which meets monthly from February through October, usually on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Some monthly General Meetings are held during the daytime (noon) and others in the evening (6:00 PM), thus allowing participation from a diverse group of members. Meeting programs are designed to enhance members’ knowledge of gardening, conservation, wildlife, and floral design (plus there’s time to compare gardening stories while enjoying a bite to eat). In addition, the club’s annual schedule offers garden visits and special workshops.

NSGC committees are formed each year to handle activities such as civic planting, holiday wreath-making for the town’s buildings, and the annual town Memorial Day Parade, as well as working with the North Stonington Schools, the Otto Kerr Greenhouse and the Stephen Main homestead. Other committees plan horticulture, wildlife, conservation, and garden visiting events and oversee the annual award of a $1000 scholarship supporting higher education in a field of study consistent with the mission of the club.

The club’s activities are primarily funded by our annual North Stonington Garden Club Plant & Seedling Sale, held in early May each year. This well-known event is happily anticipated by the local area’s gardeners, since it features wonderful perennial plants from our members’ own gardens plus annuals, shrubs, heirloom tomato plants, and garden-related items.

Current NSGC membership is 57 active members, 6 honored members and 29 supporting members. Our membership committee leads the way in reaching out to the community, striving to welcome potential new members and guests at our club events and activities.
