Besides offering a scholarship to North Stonington students and residents every year, the North Stonington Garden Club also has a long and distinguished history of civic involvement. The club takes on special projects, like the award-winning Village Green, and annual chores, such as making and distributing holiday wreathes and greenery to display on Town buildings.
The North Stonington Village Green
The club endeavors to give back to the town. Members voted to give $1000 to help build the Otto Kerr memorial greenhouse, which was formally dedicated on May 24th 1989, to honor the highly-respected junior high science teacher. The club members help plan, landscape, and plant within the greenhouse and contributed to its sprinkler system. The greenhouse is a valuable resource in much use today. Programs for school students have been offered by the club’s Schools Committee and have included trips to local universities such as UConn to tour their greenhouses and even to the Museum of Science in Boston.
The North Stonington Garden Club also donates regularly to Wheeler library, and donates annually to other groups, including the Wilcox Park Arboretum in nearby Westerly, RI.

The club’s crowning achievement, however, is the Village Green. A major contribution for beautification for the town, it was created in 1976, memorializing the United States bicentennial year. The green was designed and planted by members of the garden club and built with the involvement of many local people and youth groups. The site was greatly enhanced in 2001 with the creation of a pergola and decorative sunken millstone. The project won not only the Connecticut state award, but also the regional and National awards, for town beautification.
Through all our hard work, however, we never forget to have fun and enjoy ourselves and each other. That could be why we've been in continuous operation since 1939.
